About the Canadian Home Children Project

Despite the fact that over one in ten Canadians can trace their family history back to a British Immigrant or Home Child, few are aware of who these children were and what they lived through.

The Canadian Home Children Project (the CHCP) is a tool designed to help people reconnect with their past. It acts as an interactive guide providing information on who the Home Children were and how to find them again. Each child has a pin on our interactive map that lists key information about their life and shows where to find more. The information on each child’s pin, as well as the accompanying image(s), were found on Library and Archives Canada and Heritage’s websites.

It is absolutely crucial to understand that this website is very much a work in progress, and does not yet tell the full story. Thousands upon thousands of children were brought to Canada, and this project has not yet had the chance to give them all a place. Be assured, we are working towards this.

The About Home Children page provides a brief overview of the emigration of British Children to Canada to contextualize the information found on the CHCP website. However, more comprehensive sources exist. If you would like to learn more about Home Children, check out our Research Pages, which will lead you to key databases and sources, and provide you with a strong basis with which to start your own research.
